The tooth lifted the barbellThere’s one way to build strength without stepping foot in a gym: get the crown your dentist recommends. A crown restores the proper size and shape of your tooth after it has broken or decayed. It can also enhance the appearance of your smile. Most importantly, a crown provides strength.

A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a tooth and, when cemented into place, fully encases the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line. This “encasement” stabilizes and strengthens a tooth better than crunches stabilize and strengthen your abs.

Crowns are made with all-gold, gold with a porcelain veneer or all-porcelain. Your dentist can help you decide which is best for you.

Placement of a crown is a two-step process. First, the tooth is prepared for the crown, then an impression is taken of the preparation and a temporary crown is placed on the tooth. About a week later, the final tooth crown is cemented.

Voila. Strength without visiting the gym! But remember, though a crown is mighty strong, you still need to take care of it with regular flossing and brushing to keep the bacteria at bay.
