Out of Network & Out of Our Minds?

Whether you’re new to our practice or have been seeing Mike since you’ve had baby teeth, chances are you’ve heard us say, “We’re out of network.” But no matter how long we’ve known you, you may still be wondering: “What does that mean for me?”

Does that mean we’re out of your price range? Nope. Does that mean we’re out of our minds? No, we’re quite sane! It may sound scary, but believe us: We choose to stay out of network so we can serve you best. We do it out of love!

We Treat Your Individual Needs
We treat you based on what YOU need, which may sometimes vary from what an insurance company determines is appropriate. Insurance companies may decide how often people can obtain services like X-rays, cleanings, and treatments, they set the fees a dental office can charge for these services, and they can even determine which material a dentist can use in a filling!

We feel we can provide you with much better service if we together determine your optimal treatment plan, and then follow that plan to ensure you’re getting the best treatment possible.

Does it Cost More?
Does out of network mean it’s more expensive to get treatment? Not necessarily. Most of the time, out-of-network benefits have the same copays and fees as in-network benefits! Also, since we have the freedom to treat you based off of your needs, without the influence of a third party, we can take a conservative approach if that’s your preference. This could actually save you money in the long run!

We believe in having very honest relationships with you, and this is best achieved when we can make decisions about your health together without having to compromise your treatment plan.

Behind the Scenes with Our Partners: Dr. John Darling

When you need a specialized dental health service, we enlist a team of partners to serve you. Dr. John Darling is one of those amazing partners.

Even future surgeons have to start their career path somewhere, and Dr. John Darling started his behind the counter at a candy store.

“I spent my summers in Northern Wisconsin and my first job was at Dan’s Candy Store in Minocqua,” he told us.

Maybe seeing the damage the right hard candy could inflict upon the wrong tooth inspired him. So today Dr. Darling offers a variety of oral surgery services including extractions, implant placement and bone grafting at his practice located on Silver Spring Drive just east of Port Washington Road.

“When I refer a patient to John, he or she comes back smiling,” Mike said. “John prides himself on running a patient-centered practice rather than a high-volume practice. And patients really see the difference.”

John studied all over the country. He earned his undergraduate degree from University of Colorado at Boulder and graduated from the Marquette University School of Dentistry. Then he completed a one-year internship at St. Francis Hospital in Honolulu, HI and a four-year oral surgery residency at Sinai Hospital in Detroit, MI.

When he isn’t at his office, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Mary, his two daughters and his two black labs.

If you’re experiencing any issues that feel like they go beyond your teeth, such as neck, face or jaw pain, remember that DeWan Dental Wellness has a dedicated network to help seamlessly coordinate your care. Fixed or Removable? Pros and Cons of Bridges and Partial Dentures

Darkening a tooth makes for a great Halloween gag. But missing a real tooth is no laughing matter. Replacing it is critical to long-term dental and overall health. So how do you decide between fixed and removable replacement options?

Advantages of a fixed bridge

One fixed option is a bridge, or a fixed partial denture, a restoration that fills the space where one or more teeth have been lost. A fixed bridge is bonded or cemented into place — only a dentist can remove it.

Bridges are great because they:

  • look, feel and function like natural teeth.
  • don’t require removal for cleaning.
  • may cost less than implants.

Bridges are not so great because they:

  • are likely to be more expensive than removable partials
  • affect the teeth next to the bridge
  • may require extra effort to clean under the false tooth

Advantages of a removable partial

A removable partial denture features replacement teeth fixed to a plastic base (possibly covering a metal framework) that matches the color of your gums. They can be easily taken out of the mouth for cleaning and often have some form of clasp that attaches to your natural teeth.

Partial dentures are great because they:

  • are usually less expensive than fixed bridges or implants.
  • are usually easier to repair than fixed bridges.

Partial dentures are not so great because they:

  • can be less stable than other choices.
  • can break or be lost.
  • can be uncomfortable.
  • can be embarrassing to some people when they remove them at night and for cleaning.
  • may need more frequent replacement than other options.

Blankets Tame Nervous Chills

Is your body always at 98.6? Not really. Your temperature actually fluctuates a couple degrees throughout the day, rising in the morning and afternoon to keep you alert and falling in the evening to help you sleep. When you recline mid-day in our dental chair, your body is fooled into cooling like it’s time to relax. That’s why we offer cozy blankets with every visit.

“Our blankets help keep you warm, no question,” said Aliina, DeWan Dental Wellness clinic manager. “But I think it tames nervousness too, those chills you get when anxiety begins. If we can nip the chills, we can nip the nervousness.”

Scheduling for Triplets a Breeze at DeWan Dental Wellness

Scheduling multiple dental appointments for multiple children with multiple schedules is almost always a parenting challenge. But for Tanja Price, a long-time DeWan Dental Wellness patient and mother of triplets, it’s easy.

“I schedule appointments every time I am in the office,” she told us. “Having triplets can be tricky if I wait to schedule appointments. I would have to come in at separate times and/or dates. So, after our appointments, I go ahead and schedule the next appointment 6 months later. That way I don’t forget to schedule our next appointments, it is on my calendar and I can usually get all three kiddos checked out at once.”

And why did she choose DeWan Dental Wellness?

“First, the staff is wonderful!” she said. “They are warm and friendly. When you walk in, the receptionist welcomes you by name, it’s as though you’ve come to see an old friend. Second, the quality of care is top notch. Dr. Mike is great! He and his support staff are really dedicated to providing you with the best care and experience possible. Third, the location is convenient. It is in walking distance from where I work which makes getting to appointments hassle free.”
