The Most Delicious Way to Whiten Your Teeth: Strawberries

Want whiter teeth? Try strawberries! According to Dr. Irwin Smigel, president of the American Society for Dental Aesthetics, these summer treats are loaded with malic acid, a natural astringent to remove surface tooth discoloration.

Getting your daily dose this time of year is simple and delicious with this farmers market staple. There are 101 ways to eat strawberries, but here at your favorite East Side Milwaukee dental office, we like to toss spinach, feta cheese and strawberries in a raspberry vinaigrette for a light but filling lunch. You can use a store-bought dressing or make your own with one of our favorite recipes.

1 tablespoon strawberry jam
1/4 cup white vinegar
1/3 cup olive oil

Whisk together the strawberry jam, vinegar, and olive oil until thoroughly combined. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.

Get Whiter Teeth with New Dining Techniques

When it comes to keeping your teeth white, how you eat is just as important as what you eat. Here are two tips for improving your dining techniques to improve your smile’s brightness.

Use a straw

Bypass your teeth by drinking your beverages with a straw. Using a straw allows you to enjoy all the grape juice, coffee and chai you want without the drawback of discoloration. What doesn’t touch your teeth, won’t stain your teeth!

Keep water at the ready

Unless you’re drinking a wine cooler, using a straw to sip your fancy red may be a bit gauche. Or maybe there just isn’t a straw in sight! If that’s the case, keep a glass of water on hand to counteract the red instead. Swish after a couple sips to rinse your teeth, then swallow.

Both techniques also will help you avoid cavities!

Want Whiter Teeth? Watch What You Eat!

fruit-1477009_640
Pineapples contain bromelain, an enzyme with a number of health benefits.

What you eat can have a big impact on the appearance of your teeth. Want white and bright? Fruits and vegetables are key. For an extra boost, choose from the following foods that have additional properties that help naturally whiten teeth and keep them bright and clean.

Celery
Raw celery requires a lot of chewing. The longer you chew, the more saliva you produce. And, besides being the star in a game of spitball, saliva is a natural tooth cleanser. Celery is also loaded with fiber, which is good for your gut and good for your gums. Healthy pink gums make your teeth look whiter.

Pineapple
Pineapple is the only food that naturally contains bromelain—an enzyme with anti-inflammatory as well as cleansing properties. Bromelain helps break up the plaque that produce acids that can erode the enamel of your teeth and lead to stains and cavities.

Broccoli
Another enemy of inflammation is broccoli. And, according to the European Journal of Dentistry, the iron in broccoli protects teeth against the enamel-eroding acid produced by bacteria that can cause stains and cavities.

Strawberries
They may be red, but when you eat strawberries you’re exposing your teeth to an amazing tooth whitening compound: malic acid. The vitamin C in strawberries can also help break up plaque.

Cheese
Another acid comes into play when you eat cheese – lactic acid. Plus, the calcium in cheese and other dairy products like milk and yogurt help fortify your teeth to help keep them white.

Whiter Teeth With Lipstick

dreamstime_xs_47942702Teeth are white, right? Not quite so. Within “white,” there is a lot of variation. Turns out that most people’s teeth come in four basic shade ranges, and within each range are different levels of darkness. These basic shade ranges include:

  • reddish brown
  • reddish yellow
  • gray
  • reddish gray

But when choosing lipstick for brighter, whiter teeth you only need to know one color. Blue!

Choose me!

According to Elle magazine, any color you choose should have a cool, blue undertone. Think about the color of summer fruits: fresh watermelon, strawberry, raspberry, grape. If you like nude colors, choose sheer formulas with a hint of gloss.

Stand clear!

Here are the no-no colors: Any color with orange undertones like coral, orangey reds or browns. And for the brightest smile, stay away from neons and frosty shimmers.
